Susan Maughlin Wood, Guest lectures

Guest artist, Susan Maughlin Wood, will be presenting two lectures for aspiring composers and film/game music enthusiasts at Centralia College on Wednesday, May 25 and Thursday, May 26. The lectures will be held in Washington Hall, room 107 from noon until 1:00 pm. Thursday, May 26: Charts Alive Recording budgets can be tight, but it can take just one live instrument to bring a computer-sequenced project to the next level. Susan recently sought to improve her writing idiomatically for violin by learning how to play the instrument, and it quickly became an obsession in and of itself. Hear a recital of a recent work followed by a nuts-and-bolts demonstration of how intimate knowledge of an instrument can inform a composer's writing. Whether recorded by virtual instruments, virtuoso instrumentalists, or something in between, a composition benefits from the composer opening new doors of learning. Susan Maughlin Wood of PunchBeam Music is an independently contracting composer for media and concert music and has an extensive performance background. She holds a Master of Music in Film Composition degree from Pacific NW Film Scoring Program and serves as Vice President of the Seattle Composers Alliance. Constantly bridging the distance between conceiving, learning and doing, Susan has carried out diverse material from choral-bridging interludes of live strings and manipulated sound files for UW choral concert "Embracing the Journey," to the award-winning string quartet piece "Mirasteros," to independent CD "High Relief" as well as film and ever-present passion projects. The lectures are free of charge and open to the public. The Associated Students of Centralia College and Pro Musica, the Centralia College Music club, are sponsoring this event. For more information, please call 736-9391 ext. 248. For more information about Susan Maughlin Wood and to hear samples of her music, please check out her website: www.punchbeam.com.
